In-Service Maintenance and Repairs



To meet the Navy's need for on-going specialist advice, maintenance, repair and manufacturing capability, BAC provides both scheduled and ad-hoc services for the Collins Class submarine under a 7-year logistics support contract.


Specialist Repairs

In-service damage is inevitable in military operations and BAC has provided specialist repair services for composite components on the submarine for both BAC manufactured items as well as items manufactured by others. Chief among these has been the repairs developed by BAC on the composite sonar windows and the Cylindrical Array (CA) Dome.

The CA Dome of HMAS Collins suffered damage in the early trials and BAC was advised by the Navy that the Dome had been assessed as unrepairable. Costing over $1.2M, the RAN was concerned both at the loss of an expensive item, as well as the lack of specialist repair capability. BAC was approached, and in a joint effort with DSTO and Navy personnel, we conducted NDI to determine the full extent of damage, developed a repair technique, and undertook the repair of the CA Dome, with an overall saving to the Navy of approximately $1M. The Director of Submarines, Commodore Paul Greenfield, on accepting the repaired dome at BAC's premises, stated that:
